Google swapped the AI behind your search answers

You know those little written answers that pop up at the top when you Google something? An AI writes those. And last month, Google quietly swapped that AI for a brand-new one, without most people noticing a thing.
The new one is called Gemini 3.5 Flash. If you use Google or the Gemini app, you’re almost certainly talking to it already, you just weren’t told.
So what actually changed?
Google made Gemini 3.5 Flash its default AI, the one billions of people get automatically, everywhere, from the Gemini app to the answers inside Google Search.
Here’s the surprising part. In tech, the “fast and cheap” version of something is usually the weaker one, think economy car vs. sports car. This time Google flipped it: the fast, cheap model is also the smartest one they’ve ever shipped. It’s better than their previous top-of-the-line model at the fiddly, useful stuff, like writing working code and carrying out multi-step tasks without losing the plot.
In plain terms: the AI most people get for free just got a serious upgrade.
Why that’s a bigger deal than it sounds
When the cheap, fast option becomes the best option, good AI stops being a luxury. It gets fast enough and affordable enough to be everywhere (in your search bar, your email, your phone) answering instantly instead of making you wait.
Google is also leaning into AI that does things for you, not just answers questions. Alongside the new model it teased a personal assistant (think: an AI that can run little errands online on your behalf), which is rolling out to testers first. Early days, but it’s a hint of where this is all heading.
